What Is BMI and How to Calculate It Accurately
Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of the most widely used screening tools for assessing whether a person's weight falls within a healthy range. While it's not a perfect measure, it provides a useful starting point for understanding your health.
What Is BMI?
BMI is a simple calculation based on your height and weight. It was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and has been used by health organizations worldwide ever since.
The formula is straightforward:
BMI = weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ
Or in imperial units: BMI = (weight in pounds ร 703) รท (height in inches)ยฒ
What Do BMI Numbers Mean?
The World Health Organization classifies BMI into these categories:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 โ 24.9: Normal weight
- 25.0 โ 29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 and above: Obese

Limitations of BMI
While BMI is useful as a quick screening tool, it has important limitations you should be aware of:
- Doesn't distinguish muscle from fat โ Athletes with high muscle mass may have a "overweight" BMI despite being very fit.
- Doesn't account for body fat distribution โ Where you carry fat matters. Belly fat (visceral fat) is more dangerous than fat in other areas.
- Varies by age and gender โ BMI ranges may not be equally applicable to older adults, children, or people of different ethnic backgrounds.
- Doesn't measure overall health โ Factors like diet quality, physical activity, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels matter more than a single number.
Better Metrics to Consider
For a more complete picture of your health, consider these additional measurements alongside BMI:
- Waist circumference โ A waist over 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men indicates higher health risk.
- Waist-to-hip ratio โ Helps assess fat distribution.
- Body fat percentage โ More accurate than BMI for assessing fat vs. lean mass.
- Blood work โ Cholesterol, blood sugar, and other markers give deeper insight.
